Summer Holiday Ideas and Recommendations

If you only have a week, consider an activity holiday in Europe, but if you have a bit more time, why not visit Canada? Here are some suggestions; click on the links for further information.

Canada

Indians, Glaciers & Rockies

Teepee, Elk Island NP Cowboys and Indians come to life. Try riding Western-style and experience an authentic cowboy barbeque, then meet with the people of Canada's First Nations, sleep in a tepee and learn about their life and customs. The magnificence of the Rockies and the emerald-coloured water of Lake Louise will take your breath away. Take a walk on the Columbia Icefield; see bison, moose, elk and maybe an ambling bear. Age 7 & up. For full details see our Indians, Glaciers & Rockies Itinerary.

Slovenia

Active Slovenia

Horse Riding in Slovenia Lying in a tranquil valley of the Julian Alps on Lake Bohinj, this is a perfect base for a week of mountain adventures. Mountain biking, horse riding, rock climbing and canoeing are just some of the activities on offer, along with a trip up a cable car and a walk along precipitous gorges. Younger children will enjoy the treasure hunt in Bled with its fairytale castle. You'll stay in a four-star hotel and each day there is a different activity to enjoy. Age 5 & up. For full details see our Active Slovenia Itinerary.

Romania

Bear Watching & Danube Delta

Bear watching, Romania This holiday is about game viewing, European-style. There are more brown bears in Romania than in British Columbia. Staying in the Kingstone Mountain National Park you'll track bear and wolf and observe red fox, red deer, Chamonix, lynx and wild boar. From your hide watch the cubs playing and the wildlife interacting in their natural habitat. The area is rich in birdlife too, and if you're lucky you'll spot a rare honey buzzard. Then it's a drive down to the Danube Delta to explore the wetland area by boat and on foot - more amazing birds. Along with all the wildlife you'll have a chance to visit Dracula's Castle. Age 3 & up. For full details see our Bear Watching & Danube Delta Itinerary.

Bulgaria

Multi-activity week

Horse Riding, Bulgaria The limestone gorges and peaks of the Rhodope Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to a week of mountain-based activities. You will learn skills in orienteering, rock climbing and caving. There's a day horse-riding for all ability levels and a walk in a nature reserve where you'll set up camp, cook around a camp fire and sleep out under the stars. After visiting the Trigrad Canyon with its caves and underground waterfalls, you'll have time to explore the ancient city of Plovdiv and Sofia with its winding alleyways and cobbled streets. Age 7 & up. For full details see our Multi-activity week Itinerary.

Andorra

Pyrenean Summer

High Ropes, Pyrenees Activity Holiday This is an action-packed week and great for slightly older children and teenagers because there are lots of adrenaline-rushing activities. You stay in one of the sunniest corners of Europe in a hotel with a swimming pool right on the French/Spanish borders. It's in the heart of the Pyrenean mountains, a perfect base for mountain biking and walking, tandem paragliding and rock-climbing, white-water rafting and 'via ferrata', to name but a selection of the activities on offer. Age 6 & up. For full details see our Pyrenean Summer Itinerary

Greece

Island Odyssey

Vase & Boat, Greece This holiday combines a great mix of exploring and sailing round Evia, Greece's second largest island after Crete. The first half of the week you'll stay on Evia, where there are tiny villages and a Venetian fortress to visit, as well as quiet coves and beaches for swimming and snorkelling. For the second half you board a traditional Greek fishing boat called a 'kaiki' and meander round the islands, calling in at fishing villages and deserted bays. Each evening you'll pull into a different harbour and can soak up the atmosphere of the local tavernas and then sleep out on deck under the stars. Age 5 & up. For full details see our Island Odyssey Itinerary.

Morocco

High Atlas Adventure

High Atlas Mountains, Morocco A trip of contrasts: from the fire-eaters and snake-charmers in the bazaars of Marrakech to the dramatic Atlas mountains. Get to know the Berber people and their traditional way of life as you walk through the villages. Mules carry your baggage, and children too, leaving you to enjoy the mountains. Age 7 & up.
