Big Bucket List Family Adventures

There is no better feeling than setting a holiday date in the diary – excitement and optimism will grow the closer the departure gets! Take a look at some of our suggested family bucket list holidays below.

Canada

Think big – think Canada! This is a country of wide-open spaces and where, on the west coast in British Columbia, nature takes priority. Here the coastlines and bays are the lifeblood of the region, where salmon spawn, bears and wolves have space to roam and hunt and where whales and porpoises pass on their migratory routes. Immerse yourselves in the great outdoors as you enjoy this melting pot of wonders from the excitement of whale watching cruises to looking out from a boat for bears feeding on crabs, clams and barnacles along the inlets.

Vibrant Vancouver is a great city to explore on foot or by bike. Spend time soaking up the atmosphere in the many cafes and restaurants or learning about the indigenous first nation history and culture.

Our Whales & Bears of Vancouver Island tailor-made holiday offers all the above plus the chance to spend three nights on a family-friendly kayaking trip. Camp in the heart of the wilderness, taking daily guided kayak excursions with the chance of seeing whales, seals and other marine wildlife in close but safe proximity.

Peru

Visions of trekking to the hidden Inca city of Machu Picchu need not exclude the whole family. Our Adventure in the Andes small-group trip has been devised to appeal to those aged 11 and above with the inclusion of paddle boarding on Lake Huaypo, a pottery class, a riverside cycle ride and a visit to a Peruvian animal sanctuary. Hiking to see the wonders of Machu Picchu and a return train ride back to Cusco may be the trip highlight for some but others may delight in making their own Peruvian chocolate bar!

Mexico

Could there be a better creche for a baby grey whale than the warm waters of San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja, Mexico? Each year between January and April hundreds of grey whales congregate in these calm waters, breaking up their onward journey to the Arctic. This is the perfect time for whale watchers to enjoy some unbelievably close encounters with these gentle giants as they play close to the small boats and actively seek out human interaction. Relax at comfortable beachside cabanas on our tailor-made Whales of Baja Family Adventure, taking twice daily whale watching excursions and enjoying peaceful beach walks and some incredible star gazing.

Zambia

OK, so jumping out of bed before sunrise may not be something you experience from your young teenagers at home, but you can be sure that the thrill of seeing a pack of lions with a fresh kill or a chance encounter with a solitary leopard on an early morning game drive is something they won’t want to miss. Zambia may not attract the crowds like the Masai Mara in Kenya but your safari adventure in this welcoming and wildlife-rich country will deliver every bit as much and more as you discover the plentiful species which reside in the beautiful South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi national parks. Look out for the big five and learn specialist knowledge from your expert guides as you enjoy morning and evening game drives. Relax back at camp with a refreshing dip in the pool or with binoculars at the ready for that chance wildlife encounter. Don’t miss out on witnessing the power of the mighty ‘Smoke That Thunders’ on our Zambia Safari & Victoria Falls tailor-made itinerary.

Pack in river rafting, cycling, snorkelling and cultural experiences on our Planet of the Apes small-group trip as well as an unforgettable visit to see rescued orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. All our trips include wildlife watching excursions by boat or on foot into the jungle to look out for proboscis monkeys, macaques, orangutans and more and there is always an option for relaxing beach time at Kota Kinabalu or Gaya Island.

Costa Rica

If climate considerations are high on your list when trying to work out a family holiday destination, then Costa Rica will almost certainly appeal. This eco-conscious country committed to reverse years of deforestation over 25 years ago and concentrate on renewable energy as a way forward. You will now be visiting one of the world’s most biodiverse and wildlife-rich countries which also makes a great summer, Easter or winter holiday destination for that longer stay. Release shrieks of joy as you join your children on ziplines through the jungle canopies or as you bob along gentle rapids in an inflatable tube or raft 14kms of the Sarapiqui River on our popular Active Costa Rica small-group holiday.

Nature lovers will be in their element exploring cloud and rainforest, mangroves and coasts on suspension bridges, boat excursions and nature walks. The opportunity to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary and try out surfing along the palm-lined beaches at Cabo Matapalo are both part of our Costa Rica Wildlife Adventure tailor-made itinerary.
