Dynasties: Family Lives in the Wild

The new BBC Dynasties wildlife documentary series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, started with some emotive story-telling and filming of a group of chimpanzees. It was compelling in its portrayal of some very humanlike mannerisms and undeniably recognisable family traits.

Each episode will feature similarly intimate portrayals of four more iconic species, each fighting against many odds for their survival on earth: emperor penguins, lions, wild dogs and tigers.

Are you hungry to know more about the lives of each species featured in the series? If you have been swept up by the drama and would like to take your family to see some of these wonderful species in the wild, then look at the various options outlined below:

Chimpanzee: Uganda Wildlife Adventure – Tailor-made trip idea

Take an unforgettable tailor-made adventure deep into the heart of Uganda. Imagine taking on the role of wildlife cameraman or guide as you track chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, looking out for other primates along the way. This two-week safari for children 12+ also takes you on foot to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see southern white rhinos and by vehicle in search of lion, leopard, hyena buffalo and elephant. See the impressive Murchison Falls and hike in the Mount Rwenzori mountain range. Last, but certainly not least, is the chance to track mountain gorillas in Bwindi and spend time watching some more of our closest relatives their natural habitat.

Wild Dog: Botswana Family Safari – Tailor-made trip idea

The Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for its wild dog population. Wild dogs are the masters of pack hunting and fascinating to watch for their family interactions. Your safari begins from your airport transfer as you keep your eyes peeled for lions, leopards and cheetah. Go out on daily vehicle safaris and enjoy a sunset boat trip one evening in Botswana’s outstanding wildlife reserves of Moremi, Khwai, Savuti and Chobe. This wildlife-focused holiday is ideal for families with older children looking to experience a real mobile camping wilderness experience.

Lion: Tanzania Family Safari – Tailor-made trip idea

Watch wildlife in the incredible Ngorongoro Crater and gaze out over the endless grassy plains of the Serengeti. Your children will love this classic safari adventure, not least looking out for the ‘Lion King’ and his pride – you may even spot a Zazu (red-billed hornbill), a Timon or two (meerkats) and the ever-adorable Pumbaa (warthog) and family! In fact, the big five are all there to be seen along with a huge supporting wildlife cast. Learn about the different ecosystems and from the pastoral communities, such as the Mbugwe tribe in Tarangire, the Wadatooga tribe at Lake Eyasi and the distinctive Masai.

Tiger: Taj & Tigers – Small-group trip

Seeing a tiger in the wild is an unforgettable experience. These mainly solitary creatures like to keep out of the limelight, and who would believe that a coat of orange and black stripes could be such an ‘invisibility cloak’? However, keep your eyes peeled on game drives through India’s Ranthambore Park and you will hopefully be rewarded. India’s treasures are also revealed in some magnificent architecture and a puppet show and Bollywood film in Jaipur, a tour of Old Delhi and arguably the jewel in the crown – seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise.
