Six Reasons to Visit the Azores on Your Next Family Holiday

The captivatingly beautiful and verdant Azores Islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean 1,500km west of Portugal’s capital Lisbon. These rich volcanic islands are a natural playground for families who love activity and adventure but prefer to distance themselves from resort-style beach holidays. Find out what makes the Azores such an appealing holiday for families.

Unspoiled Nature

As a group of nine islands, the Azores archipelago is an oasis of green in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, roughly covering 906 square miles of lush green landscape consisting of volcanic craters, vivid blue green lakes, hots springs, hidden coves and boundless opportunities to explore.

Whale migration routes skirt the islands so you can view whales and dolphins offshore without stepping off dry land but for a closer experience this is one of the best places from which to head out on a boat to satisfy your curiosity of these magnificent mammals. The species most frequently seen are sperm and pilot whales, beaked whales and false killer whales, together with bottlenose, common, spotted, Risso’s and striped dolphin.

Agreeable Climate

The Azores have a pleasant climate all year round but the best time to visit happens to coincide with the school summer holiday period between July and September, when temperatures are between 19 – 22°C and rainfall is at its lowest.

Most of us Brits function a lot better knowing there is a good cup of tea close to hand! Welcome to the home of the only tea plantation in Europe and the only place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses. Not only that, how about tasting the local cozido stew which is cooked using natural steam from the ground?

Travel Time

Despite a stopover at Lisbon airport (direct flights from the UK are limited), the flight time taken to reach this spectacular destination from the UK is only 3 hours 45 minutes – perfect for children and less time than reaching many other European destinations! Drives once on the islands are short too, with easy access to all your activities.
