Hermanus

Hermanus is a sleepy seaside town on the south coast which comes alive between August and early November when the whales are around. An interesting place for families to visit for the day.

Humpbacks and Bryde’s whales are generally spotted from off-shore boats, but the Southern Right whale is commonly spotted from both shore and boat. The Southern Right whale migrate from the cold Antartic Ocean to the South African waters to calf from June and return to the Antartic at the end of November. Gansbaai, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay and Port Elizabeth also offer great whale watching opportunities too.
