This is a relaxed self-guided family walking holiday that can be as active as you like. Spend time enjoying the stunning scenery of the Salzkammergut area, following easy trails along alpine pastures and lakeshores.

Take a cable car to ascend Gosaukamm mountain for spectacular views over the region, cycle down mountain bike trails and visit Hallstatt, Austria’s oldest village, perched between the lake and the Dachstein Mountains.  

The itinerary below is just a suggestion; each day, choose from a menu of suggested walks varying from four to 12 kilometres, or take the local bus to visit nearby attractions.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Salzburg & transfer to Gosau

    Fly to Salzburg and transfer to your accommodation in Gosau, Staying in a traditional guesthouse with spectacular views of the nearby Alpine peaks, this is the perfect base for summer walking in Austrian Lake District.

    The next six days are free for you to choose from a selection of self- guided walks or to enjoy some of the other activities available in the area such as the open-air museum, mountain bike trails, Dachstein caves or the town of Hallstatt.

  2. Day 2: Zwieselalm Pasture Cable Car

    Today, with the guidance of your walking notes, take the bus to Vorderer Gosausee. From here, ascend the Gosaukamm Mountain for spectacular views across the region, and follow an easy trail through the pastures.

  3. Day 3: Free day

    If you would like a break from walking, you could choose from some of the many other activities available in the area. Bicycles can be hired in Gosau and you can spend the day exploring the cycling trails in the area. Alternatively, take the bus to Bad Goisern where there are options for canoeing, caving and archery, together with a climbing wall.

  4. Day 4: Russbach circular trail

    Follow a circular hiking trail which leads you through the Alpine pastures, learning about local life along the way. Be sure to sample some of the local cheese specialities as you pass the grassland huts along the route.

  5. Day 5: Lakes of Gosausee

    Today's trail takes you through forest, past a via ferrata and continues alongside crystal clear lakes, surrounded by the silhouette of the mountains.

  6. Day 6: Urzeitwald Adventure Park

    Take the local bus to the adventure park and follow the forest trails, passing interactive exhibits and activities such as rafts, ziplines, playground equipment and water attractions.

  7. Day 7: Echerntal Valley Hiking Trail

    Take the bus to Hallstatt and follow a trail past steep rock, mountain forest, streams and waterfalls. Be sure to visit the picturesque village after your walk, where you will find a range of cultural attractions such as the market square and the world’s oldest salt mine.

  8. Day 8: Fly back to the UK

    Transfer to Salzburg airport in time for your return flight.
