Focusing on the south of the country, this itinerary provides the perfect combination of a few days to travel and explore the scenic and cultural highlights, with some time to rest and relax on the Red Sea coast.
- Snorkel the Red Sea's coral reef
- Camel trek in Wadi Rum
- Stay in a Bedouin-style desert camp
- Visit Kerak’s ancient Crusader Castle
- Explore the lost city of Petra
- Spend the night in traditional Jordanian homestay
We first head to the north of the country to the nature reserve of Ajloun, then the city of Jerash - a beautifully preserved ancient colonaded Roman city full of temples and amphitheatres before travelling to the 'floating' Dead Sea - the lowest point on earth!
From here we travel through the centre of the country to explore the incredible lost city of Petra - one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, before heading south and deep into the desert landscape of the Wadi Rum, where you will discover an astounding wilderness made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Here you travel across the dunes on a four-wheel-drive jeep excursion before spending the night stargazing from a Bedouin-style camp.
A visit to Jordan would not be complete without some time on the Red Sea coast and here you can snorkel over the nursery corals that are accessible directly from the beach - the perfect end to an incredible holiday.
Typical Itinerary
-
Day 1: Depart UK
The group will be met on arrival and transferred to our accommodation where we will be able to settle in and rest and relax for evening.
-
Day 2: Ajloun Forest Reserve & Ajloun Castle
We make a brief stop in Amman, where a brief stop will be made to explore the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre - an incredible sight when seen for the first time.
Having made a casual exploration of this site, we continue north, arriving at Ajloun in the late afternoon. We have the choice between two activities this afternoon - zipwire or visiting Ajloun Castle. Tonight is spent in a traditional Jordanian home stay.
-
Day 3: Morning City Tour of Jerash & swimming in the Dead Sea
Hidden for centuries under sand, Jerash has slowly been excavated over the last 70 years to reveal a distinct blend of Roman and Greek influences in a formal Roman provincial city.
Visit the Temple of Hercules, sit yourself in the amphitheatre, stroll beneath the towering columns of the main thoroughfare or watch the re-enactments of the chariot racing and gladiatorial combats at the hippodrome.
We then transfer to the Dead Sea where you can stroll down to the hotel beach area and enter the Dead Sea.
-
Day 4: Kerak Castle & Petra
Today we transfer to Petra - and if there's time we hope to take a guided tour of the famous Crusader Castle at Kerak. We arrive at Petra by late afternoon where we have time to settle into our hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening at one of the many local restaurants.
-
Day 5: Petra tour
Today will be entirely devoted to exploring this UNESCO world heritage site. Although you will have a guide with you for the duration of the day, you are entirely at liberty to explore the ancient city independently and at your own pace.
On certain days of the week, Petra is opened in the evening for a candle-lit visit. Although only the Treasury building is accessible, the candle-lit experience is both magical and beautiful and you will also have the option to make the night visit if it’s available.
-
Day 6: Little Petra & Wadi Rum
A visit to Petra wouldn’t be complete without also visiting the nearby settlement of ‘Little Petra’. Although not on the same grand scale as the entire Petra city, this small area is equally as fascinating and a short morning visit will be made, before transferring to Wadi Rum.
We have a few hours to relax before being driven into the vast expanse of the Wadi Rum on a 4-wheel drive jeep.
-
Day 7: Camel trek & transfer to Aqaba
There is time for an optional camel ride this morning before leaving the breathtaking Wadi Rum behind for the short journey to Aqaba, Jordan’s Red Sea resort.
Should you wish, you can snorkel along the nursery coral that is accessible directly from the shore.
-
Day 8: Return to the UK
-
Days 8-10 : OPTIONAL EXTENSION: Aqaba
For those families who have the time, why not extend your stay in Aqaba in a 5-star beach front resort and spend some time souvenir shopping or giving scuba diving a try? Contact us to find out more.
