As I stood on the edge of the platform and looked down at the gorge below, I started to wonder if this was really such a good idea. But before I could let myself back out, the “ok” came over the radio and I pushed off, soaring through the air over the Sava Dolinka River.
The Zipline Dolinka is the longest zipline in Europe, with seven flights making up over four kilometres of ziplining. After the first couple of lines, it all started to come a bit more naturally, and I was able to enjoy the stunning views while getting my adrenaline fix!
This was just one activity I did while experiencing our Families Worldwide Alpine Slovenia itinerary. A few days later, I would be on the Sava Dolinka River itself, white water rafting over grade II-III rapids in a small group. The weather was scorching because of the recent heatwave, and we often stopped for swims in refreshingly cold water. Sometimes we would just lie back and dunk our heads in – a manoeuvre known as the ‘Bled Alarm Clock’. The children on the rafting trip had a great time, sitting at the front of the raft to face down the waves and running around the edge of the raft, while we the adults tried to unbalance them and get them in the water (all under the supervision of our guides, of course!)
The hike up to the Šija Mountain Hut was a really special experience. After approximately two hours walking through the beautiful forest, and passing cows and donkeys on the way to our destination, we emerged onto rolling pastures on the mountainside. The Šija Hut is family-owned and guests are greeted by the incredibly friendly and well-trained dog. We were treated to coffee, rehydration drinks, and the most incredible dessert called “Štruklji”, an alpine speciality.
On the full trip, families would spend the night at this quaint hut, and there's plenty to see and do during the afternoon and evening. I’m told at night there are amazing viewing conditions for star gazing because of the remote location. Sadly, we didn’t have a night to spare, so after several pleasant hours, I dragged myself away and headed back down the mountain.
If so far this sounds a bit too sedate for your adventurous family, then the canyoning activity should get your adrenaline pumping! Rappelling, jumping, sliding and splashing through the river was a challenging and exciting experience. Another excursion sent me through the beautiful Triglav National Park to riverwalk in the emerald waters of the Učja River.
In between all of this action, I managed to find time to walk around the picturesque Lake Bled, where every angle looks like it came straight from a postcard. You can get around the lake in almost any way you can imagine - bicycle, scooter, rowboat, paddleboard – or just using your own two feet. The weather was hot, but around the lake, there were plenty of spots where we could take a break and have a swim. And if you still find yourself looking for something to do, Bled offers a huge variety of activities, from tobogganing to trampolining!
It's difficult to think of a better setting for an action-packed family holiday. Lake Bled just has so much to offer in activities, scenery, and hospitality, and it is just half an hour away from Ljubljana airport. Staying on the edge of the beautiful lake, with stunning views of the Julian Alps in the background, is something I’ll never forget.
