On this exciting adventure to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, you will go out on daily boat rides to interact with the friendly grey whales which arrive at San Ignacio Lagoon each spring to breed and raise their calves.

  • Enjoy twice-daily boat trips
  • Interact with friendly grey whales
  • See mothers with their calves
  • Stay in beachfront 'cabana' cabins surrounded by nature

Every year, between January and April, Mexico’s San Ignacio Lagoon becomes a sanctuary for hundreds of grey whales before they continue their journey north to Arctic waters. The ‘friendly’ grey whale calves approach and interact with the boats along with their mothers, often close enough to touch. Trained naturalists will help you learn about the whales, their social interactions and their habitat, and you will stay at a peaceful beachfront camp, in a ‘cabana’, surrounded by nature.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Los Angeles

Fly to Los Angeles where you will have an overnight stop.

  2. Day 2: Continue to Loreto

Fly to Loreto and transfer to San Ignacio lagoon, your base for the next five nights. Stay in a simple wooden beachfront ‘cabana’ cabin where there will be communal dining and living areas.

  3. Days 3-6 : Whale watching

Boats depart every morning after breakfast for around 1.5 hours of whale watching. During this time, you will enjoy some incredible encounters with the grey whales and their calves.

You will have whale watch excursions each morning, and afternoons are left free – have lunch and then discover more local wildlife by exploring nearby tidal pools or birdwatching from camp. Every afternoon, a second whale watching boat trip departs around 2pm.

In the evening, there is normally time for a wander along the beach or to watch whales from the shore, before enjoying the sunset over the sand dunes. It is also possible to visit nearby salt flats or cave paintings.

Sunset is followed by a home-cooked dinner as well as a programme of evening talks and presentations. Night time star-gazing is a must, as there is no light pollution here and you will enjoy the peaceful sounds of whales in the lagoon, and coyotes in the desert.

  4. Day 7: Depart Loreto

At the end of your stay, drive back to Loreto to return your hire car. Most flights depart Loreto for Los Angeles in the afternoon.

  5. Day 8: Arrive in the UK

Return to the UK the following afternoon.

Please note: This trip can be ran between January - April subject to the whale migration. The itinerary is only a suggestion, you can tailor-make the trip so that it is just right for you and your family, adjusting the number of nights at the camp or extending your trip in the Baja Peninsula.
