This tailor made family itinerary will see you visit orangutans, before heading deep into Borneo’s interior to meet the Iban people, former headhunters. End the trip with some beach time in Sabah.

Your family adventure starts with a wander around the city of Kuching and a visit to Semenggok to see the conservation work to rehabilitate orangutans. Explore the diverse eco-systems of Bako National Park before travelling deep into the Sarawak rainforest to stay at an Iban longhouse and learn about their culture. Next fly to Kota Kinabalu to spend a few days relaxing by the beach.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

    Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Kuching via Kuala Lumpur.

  2. Day 2: Arrive Kuching

    On arrival in Kuching, a representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is then at leisure to explore this bustling multi-cultural city and its temples, markets and craft shops.

  3. Day 3: Semonggok: orangutan rehabilitation centre

    This morning visit Semenggok rehabilitation centre, the best place in Sarawak to see Borneo’s most famous residents, who have been rescued from captivity or deforestation. The afternoon is at leisure back in Kuching.

  4. Day 4: Bako National Park

    Today proceed to Bako National Park for a full day’s tour. The small peninsula is home to seven distinct ecosystems and home to fascinating plants and wildlife, its most famous resident being the bizarre proboscis monkey. Return to Kuching this afternoon.

  5. Day 5: Mengkak longhouse stay

    Travel by road through the scenic countryside and then take a longboat across the lake to an Iban longhouse nestled on a hill beside the river. Spend the night at the longhouse where you will be invited to participate in traditional dancing, music and games - a true cultural experience for all the family.

  6. Day 6: Batang Ai

    Enjoy a blowpipe demonstration and take a short walk around the longhouse to learn more about the Iban culture and observe the residents going about their daily routine.

    After a traditional lunch, travel to Batang Ai, home to one of the oldest Iban settlements in Sarawak.

  7. Day 7: Return to Kuching

    Transfer back to Kuching, where the rest of the day is at leisure.

  8. Day 8: Fly to Kota Kinabalu

    Transfer to the airport for a short flight to Kota Kinabalu.

  9. Days 9-12 : Free time at the beach

    The next few days are kept free for you to do as much or as little as you like at your beach resort. Sports and spa facilities can be enjoyed at the resort, as well as a beautiful beach and nature reserve. Day trips to nearby attractions can be arranged.

  10. Day 13: Fly back to the UK

    Depart on your flight back to the UK, arriving later the same day.
