Things to see in Costa Rica: Rainforest & Volcanoes
Arenal Volcano
The famous Arenal Volcano at 1,633 metres high is said to be one of the world's most active volcanoes - small-scale eruptions take place almost on an almost continuous basis around the clock. However it's only at night that the activity becomes really apparent - if it's clear you can see lava flows glowing incandescent like a firework display.
Sarapiquí
Sarapiquí is in the heart of Costa Rica's rainforests and the river is famous for rafting. But another reason to come here is to learn all about chocolate! The tour reveals the history of these beans - from their origins in ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures to their introduction to Europe. You will learn all about how the cacao beans are grown and transformed into mouth watering chocolate.
Selva Bananito
A secluded rainforest where you can really experience life in the jungle. Take a canopy observation platform tour or walk to the waterfalls and rappel if you feel brave; perhaps try jungle tree climbing. Learn all about the local ecology and you'll meet some new creatures such as poison dart frogs and leaf-cutter ants.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park
The volcanoes in this park are active and last spewed ash and lava in 1991. The National Park offers stunning landscapes, beautiful waterfalls, giant trees, hot springs, mud pits and a volcanic lagoon. As well as walks in the park itself, if you want to try something different, you can slap mud all over your body and then simmer slowly in a natural hot spring.
