Totora Reed Boats, Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca

The world's highest navigable lake at an altitude of 3,800 metres. The lake is home to a number of islands with distinct indigenous communities. Home to the Uro people, the floating reed Uros Islands are particularly fascinating due to the fact they are man-made using totora reeds which grow in the lake and need replacing every three or so months.
