World Oceans Day is being celebrated around the planet today, the 8th of June. The day is all about collaboration and co-ordination for a better future for our wonderful oceans. This year's theme is 'Healthy oceans, healthy planet'. We've listed some fun facts about the ocean - how many did you know already?

The Earth's surface is 70% covered by oceans - that means that all the countries in the world only make up 30% of the world...

An estimated 50-80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface - and many believe there are still millions of species to be discovered!

Where is the largest living structure?

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The world's largest living structure, the Great Barrier Reef, is found under the sea off the coast of Australia. Did you know that it can be seen from the moon?

What is the largest living animal?

Blue Whale

The largest living animal in the world lives in our oceans - the blue whale. They've been known to grow up to 30 metres in length... that's the length of two double decker buses! They can weigh up to 173 tonnes - over 13 times the weight of a double decker bus!

Do you know how ocean tides are formed?

The warmest sea water in the world?

Persian Gulf Sea

The Persian Gulf has the warmest sea water in the world at 35 degrees Celsius, closely followed by the Red Sea at 32 degrees.
