After arriving at Dar Es Salaam, head to Saadani National Park to explore the bush, nestled beside white sand beaches. Then travel on an African train venturing deep into the incredible Selous Game Reserve, the largest in Africa and full of wildlife. Learn about their elephant collaring project, enjoy a relaxing canoe ride, meet the locals at a Masai village and search for lions, zebras and wild dogs as well as the smaller wildlife to be found here.
Finally, a short flight takes you to the beautiful spice island of Zanzibar where you can explore the winding streets of Stone Town and enjoy some well-deserved beach time with the family. You may extend the trip with a few extra days on Zanzibar and enjoy its quiet beaches with beautiful views of the Indian ocean.
Day1: Depart UK
Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Dar es Salaam.
Day2: Arrive Dar es Salaam
Arrive in Dar es Salaam and transfer to nearby hotel.
Day3: Transfer to Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park's unique location provides the opportunity for birdlife and wildlife viewing, alongside fabulous white-sand beaches. There is a variety of activities on offer, such as learning bush skills, tracking wildlife or making a fire with a park ranger. In the afternoon, learn how to set a camera trap.
Day4: Elephant collaring project
After a morning game drive you can learn about the Saadani elephant collaring project and understand the lives and activities of these gentle giants.
Take a relaxing morning canoe ride in the mangroves and look for birds and insects on a nature walk. Go on a late afternoon/evening game drive and enjoy dinner on the salt flats under the stars.
Day6: Transfer to Dar es Salaam
Enjoy an exciting drive around the Elephant island private concession and a boat safari on the Wami River before leaving Saadani for Dar es Salaam.
Day7: Train to Selous
Catch the TAZARA train to Selous and enjoy the passing rural landscape. On arrival, you'll be transferred to your lodge in Selous, where you'll stay in stone cabins with amazing views and a natural spring water pool. In the evening, climb up to a treehouse overlooking the watering hole to see elephant, buffalo and zebra as they come to drink.
Day8: Wildlife viewing, lake boat trip
Set off on a full day game drive, including a boat trip on Lake Tagalala, looking out for hippo, crocodiles and the colourful birdlife – if you’re lucky enough, you may see elephants digging for water at one of the dry sand beds.
Day9: Morning walking safari
Enjoy an early morning walking safari in the Selous Game Reserve, home to one-third of all the world's wild dogs, as well as elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. After lunch there is an optional visit to the local Masai Village to experience rural Tanzanian life; alternatively, relax by the pool or visit the treehouse for some more fantastic wildlife viewing.
Day10: Fly to Zanzibar; free time to explore
Take a short flight to Zanzibar and transfer to your hotel in Stone Town. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore your surroundings.
Day11: Morning free & depart Zanzibar
The day is at leisure until a late afternoon transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your international flights home.
Day12: Arrive UK
You should note: You can extend this family holiday with an extra few days in Zanzibar, where the whole family can unwind at our hand-picked hotel set on a tranquil beach, or enjoy activities such as sea kayaking, snorkelling and forest treks.

We stay in fixed tents at Saadani, with proper beds, en suite facilities, large balconies and hammocks. There’s a restaurant bar on stilts overlooking the sea. The tents generally sleep 2 persons, but an extra bed can be added; family tents can be arranged. One night is in Bab’s camp, a satellite camp with a 20 metre viewing tower with restaurant and bar, plus a crow’s nest for animal viewing. Our accommodation in Selous is in well-appointed stylish stone cottages with loads of character and friendly service. All rooms are en suite with a private veranda. There are two restaurants and a bar. For those taking the extension to Zanzibar, you will stay in a boutique beach hotel, with en suite facilities, swimming pool, spa and restaurant.
