Tunis boasts bustling markets, the nearby ruins of Hannibal's Carthage and the delightful seaside village of Sidi Bou Said. After seeing the Great Mosque at Kairouan and Sbeitla's magnificent Roman temples you'll ride camels into the desert and camp at an oasis palmerie.
There are enchanting fairytale Berber villages, the underground 'troglodyte' houses of Matmata (where Star Wars was filmed). and El Jem's fabulous Roman amphitheatre all waiting to be explored.
- Day 1. Fly to Tunis.
- Day 2. Gafsa.
- Drive to Gafsa via Kairouan & Sbeitla, visit Great Mosque & Roman temples.
- Day 3. Tozeur.
- Tozeur, explore oasis palmerie and visit Chebika (Star Wars set) & Tamerza.
- Day 4. Douz.
- Visit dinosaur park; drive to Douz, ride camels to Zafrane.
- Day 5. Matmata, Tataouine & Chenini.
- Drive to Chenini village via Matmata (troglodyte caves) & Tataouine.
- Day 6. Roman amphitheatre.
- Drive via Sfax to El Jem Roman amphitheatre & Sousse medina.
- Day 7. Hammamet castle.
- Explore Hammamet castle.
- Day 8. Sidi Bou Said
- To Sidi Bou Said; visit medina/markets, Bardo Museum & Carthage en route.
- Day 8. Tunis to London.
- Drive to Tunis; fly to London.
- Is it right for your family?
- There's quite a bit of travelling, but the itinerary is packed with interest and there are only two long driving days. Because of this it is more suited to children over seven. Accommodation is in comfortable hotels plus one night in the desert in a simple, but comfortable, Bedouin-style camp.
