The island of Sao Miguel is the largest of the Azores' nine islands, covering nearly 800 square kilometres. The smallest is Corvo which is just 18 square kilometres.
Situated on the island of Pico, Mount Pico is the highest point in the Azores and Portugal at 2,351 metres.
In the 1750’s the tea leaf was found growing in the wild of the Azores. Commercial tea production in the region still continues today and the tea plantation of San Miguel is the only one in Europe.
Sao Miguel is the only place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses.
