Six family friendly film locations you can visit around the world

Many of us got our sense of adventure from watching films of far-away places and day dreaming about the quests we would encounter there. Our childhood favourite characters and films still inspire our holiday choices to this day. You can transport your children to another world on our family adventures, but did you know you can also visit the settings of some of their favourite films? Here we have rounded up the best of the movie destinations we visit:

  • Morocco

  • Morocco is a haven for film enthusiasts with movies such as The Mummy, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia all having shot in various locations, including Ait Ben Haddou, the famous World Heritage Site. You can visit the Ksar and its ancient buildings on our Teen Hike & Bike, Sahara Dune Adventure and Kasbahs & Coasts trips.

  • Costa Rica

  • Jurassic Park is set on a fictional island, Isla Nublar, just off the coast of Costa Rica. You’ll out run the dinosaurs on ziplines and rafts on our itineraries in Costa Rica, and might even come face to face with prehistoric relatives such as the American crocodile in the rainforest.

  • Sri Lanka

  • Intrepid explorers of all ages will be enthralled by our Ceylon Discovery and Active Sri Lanka trips which visit Kandy, where you will find the scene for the rope bridge climax in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

  • Vietnam & Thailand

  • You’ll spot Phuket Bay in two James Bond films, Man with a Golden Gun and Tomorrow Never Dies, where it stands in for Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. See the exposed limestone towers in Thailand for yourself on our Thailand in Style trip or explore Ha Long Bay in Vietnam with your family on Hanoi to Saigon.

  • Croatia

  • Although not up for release until 2017, there have been sightings of the Star Wars: Epsiode VIII cast and crew in full extra-terrestrial costume in Dubrovnik this year. We’re hoping the enchanting makes a large impression in the film as it has in TV shows such as Game of Thrones, which has boosted the tourism there considerably. Take your wannabe jedis there on our Active Croatia trip.

  • Italy

  • Italy has been a muse for many a film maker. Your children might recognise Montepulciano as the home of the Volturi in Twilight: New Moon and coincidentally, for the grown-ups, is also a great wine growing region. The Palace of Caserta, near Naples, has been used as the setting for palaces in Star Wars – The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. You can visit on our Natural Tuscany trip and Vesuvius & Pompeii.
